Issa Rae Is Taking the Final Season of 'Insecure' Seriously
In a new cover story for Vanity Fair, Issa Rae shares details about the last season of the fan-favorite HBO show Insecure and touches on upcoming projects.
Issa Rae is dishing out quite a bit on the fifth and final season of Insecure in her latest magazine cover story for Vanity Fair. The details she mentioned throughout it are worth putting on front street.
Since all eyes are on Rae as she prepares to air the Insecure, the feature made it clear that she’s planning on going out with a bang. At one point she shares, “I’m finding myself putting season-one pressure back on the show again.” She’s also been rewatching Insecure from the beginning. Rae also mentions, “All these memories come up, so I can’t watch it purely objectively. And then, of course, you look at performance stuff, you look at hair stuff, you look at appearance stuff.”
She even notes during the expansive story that she has no plans of starring in a show she works on ever again. “I told myself I would never write and be in a show that I created again. It takes up a lot of your life.” That’s an interesting anecdote given how well-received Insecure was.
As for the looming projects that are also taking up space in her life, Sweet Life is one. It’s described as a docuseries that’ll be similar to Laguna Beach and The Hills but with a Black cast (that’s exciting). It was inspired by BET’s beloved series Baldwin Hills. Also in the arsenal is Nice White Parents which we’ve previously shared a bit about, it’s an adaptation of a podcast centering a public school in Brooklyn. Rae is also writing, producing and starring in a project titled Perfect Strangers.
The lineup doesn’t end here, Rae in addition to the docket above, she’s been working on a revival of Matt Damon and Ben Affleck’s HBO docuseries Project Greenlight. The original aired from 2001 to 2003 and moved to Bravo for its third season in 2005. HBO brought it back for its final season. The show previously gave funds to early-stage filmmakers. “I want this version of the show to make filmmaking feel attainable,” Issa says. The updated version of the show will be produced by Rae’s Hoorae and Miramax.
We’re avid Insecure fans over here so we wouldn’t want to end things without sharing Condola was mentioned during a virtual Insecure meeting in the cover story and so was Lawrence who might be cooking lasagna during an episode of the final season.
