J. Cole's 'Crooked Smile' And 'Can't Get Enough' Certified Platinum
Much has been said - and memed - about how J. Cole's 2014 Forest Hills Drive went platinum without any featured artists. Now, Cole has to make room for two more platinum plaques from older gems.
The Recording Industry Association of America certified "Crooked Smile" and "Can't Get Enough" as platinum on Friday.
"Crooked Smile," which appears on Cole's 2013 studio album Born Sinner, features guest vocals from TLC. The music video pays homage to Aiyana Stanley-Jones, a seven-year-old from Detroit, Mich. who was shot and killed during a police raid. "Can't Get Enough" is a song from 2011 that features singer Trey Songz.
These new plaques further confirm what any music industry insider has known for a while now. Even though J. Cole still has a relatively grassroots approach to how he creates and spreads the word about his music, but he's got one of the most coveted fan bases in the industry. He painstakingly built his fan base from the ground up by telling his story and throwing $1 shows, and those supporters will likely stick around for the entirety of his career.
The recent additions marks six platinum singles for J. Cole: "Crooked Smile," "Can't Get Enough," "Wet Dreamz," "No Role Models," "Power Trip" (feat. Miguel), and "Work Out." His first two albums, Cole World: A Sideline Story and Born Sinner, both went platinum, and Forest Hills Drive went double platinum.
