J Dilla's Record Collection For Sale On eBay
Yes, trainspotters. J Dilla's record collection--or at least portions of it--has been put up for sale on eBay. You may remember that last spring, the owner of Detroit-area record store UHF discovered a cache of Dilla donuts--including correspondence, beat-tapes and rare pieces on the local Tribe jazz imprint--in a Clinton Township storage unit, and put them up for sale in his store. In part because of the public outcry, Maureen 'Ma Dukes' Yancey stepped in and UHF proprietor Jeff Brubeck graciously turned the materials over to her and the J Dilla foundation. Now Ma Dukes has now put a portion of the records on eBay in what is being billed as the first of a series of weekly sales. With each vinyl purchase, bidders will receive:
1) A signed and numbered certificate from Maureen Yancey (Ma Dukes) stating the LP record you will receive is from J Dilla’s personal collection.2) An LP originally bought by Dilla (on one of his many crate diggin’ expeditions) still in the loose bag Dilla put all his records in. None of the records have been cleaned or checked for defects. You will receive it just as it was in Dilla’s collection, possible writing on covers, old price tags, fingerprints and all.
And so it begins. Read some additional disclaimers and then hit the link below to put in your bid on a piece of donut-making history.
The certificates are numbered with the plan of an online registry for Dilla fans to list their Dilla Collection LP. Including the artist, title, and whether any tracks on the LP are known to have been sampled by Dilla. This registry is dependent on the sales of the limited amount of the collection and response from the fans. Visit the J Dilla foundation web site for future updates.Records are being chosen randomly (Ma’s Choice) so please do not send any requests, it will not be answered.
