James Gunn Says 'Superman' Is A 'Huge Priority' For The DC Universe
With James Gunn and Peter Safran as the new heads of DC Studios, the aforementioned confirmed on Twitter that a new Superman is coming.
Despite the changing of hands at DC Studios, new company co-head James Gunn has confirmed that Superman is one of their biggest priorities. On Saturday (December 10), Gunn tweeted about his fandom of the 1978 Superman to which a DC fan asked if another Ka-El film was coming. Gunn confirmed, saying that Superman is "a huge priority, if not the biggest priority.”
Henry Cavill, who's played The Man of Steel since 2013, was last had a cameo as the superhero character in the post-credits scene of Black Adam. Later the 39-year-old British actor went to social media to reveal that a new Superman film is forthcoming.
Cavill also spoke about his return on a live recording of 92NY podcast Happy Sad Confused.
“The character means so much to me. It’s been five years now. I never gave up hope,” Cavill told the audience. “It’s amazing to be here now talking about it again. There is such a bright future ahead for the character. I’m so excited to tell a story with an enormously joyful Superman.”
The news comes a few days after DC Studios' Wonder Woman 3 was cancelled under the guidance of director Patty Jenkins. On Tuesday (December 13) Jenkins published a statement to Twitter, clarifying that the film company is "buried in changes," thus unable to move forward with WW3.
"I never walked away. I was open to doing anything asked of me," Jenkins wrote. "It was my understanding there was nothing I could do to move anything forward at this time."
Gunn and DC Studios co-lead Peter Safran are slated to detail their long-term plans for DCU soon, but Gunn has teased a Mister Terrific project while Jason Momoa's Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom is coming December 2023.
