Jay Z Gets Clowned By Larry Wilmore For Keeping Ties With Barneys
The Daily Show correspondent Larry Wilmore roasted Jay Z over hot coals for his continued relationship with Barneys New York - a deal that has shown no signs of fizzling despite public outcry against the relationship after the high-end retailer made headlines for racial profiling. Wilmore and host Jon Stewart lit into the iconic Brooklyn MC for being too big to go against the man, because he has become the man. Wilmore began his solid gold diatribe by spoofing the now-infamous commentary of Jay's dear friend Kanye West with the opening line, "Jay Z doesn't care about black people." While the comment got plenty of laughs, it also served as a sobering reminder of the commerce that is likely behind Jay's decision to stay relatively quiet on the issue ahead of a collaborative product launch with the retailer that just happens to coincide with the holiday season. Wilmore addressed the issue with a heaping helping of hot fire:
“He doesn’t care about black people who want him to boycott Barneys, and I don’t blame him, Jon. He’s got a multi-million dollar brand to protect…" Wilmore continued, "These days, he’s too big of a commercial force to rail against the danger of the man. He is the danger. He is the one who frisks. He’s not Jay Z, he’s Jay Z Penny!”
As if that zinger weren't enough to put the nail in the coffin, the pair dutifully examined a photo of Jay Z in a hard-hat at the groundbreaking for Brooklyn's Barclays Center before Wilmore gave Stewart his own analysis of the MC's actions in the picture:
“He’s burying the remains of his street cred.”
