Jay-Z Performs "P.S.A." Live At So-So Def's 20th Anniversary
Jay-Z dropped in for a surprise performance of "P.S.A" at the 20th Anniversary Celebration of Jermaine Dupri's So-So Def Records. The Atlanta label, responsible for acts like Bow Wow, Da Brat, Kris-Kross, Xscape, Jagged Edge and Ghost Town DJs, was a powerhouse of the south in its prime. So-So Def made its business churning out hip-hop hits from a region of the country that was under-represented and without its proper respect in the early 90s. The label founded by Dupri, son of music producer Michael Mauldin, worked alongside other rap movements springing up across the south in places like Miami, Texas, Tennessee and New Orleans, to prime a national audience for an eventual southern dominance that began with Atlanta's Dungeon Family and Memphis' Hypnotize Minds breaking out of southern markets in the earlier days to the current success of camps like Maybach Music Group and YMCMB. Known for making hits and one of the first producers from the south to be recognized on a national level, Dupri has facilitated the careers and chart-topping successes of a laundry list of artists.
