Pass The Popcorn: Jennifer Hudson Is In Talks To Play Aretha Franklin In An Upcoming Biopic
And the biopic treatments keep on coming. Following the success of Straight Outta Compton (at least in the box office) the film's producer Scott Bernstein appears to already have his sights on another treatment. This time, focusing his lens on a grip of years in the life of the incomparable Aretha Franklin; a project that seems both necessary and proper given her stature amongst r&b's greatest voices and her ability to transcend both physically and spiritually the molds of what a singer should be in the '60s and '70s, but making painfully clear what a singer could be in those years. More excitingly, however, is the news of who is in negotiations to portray the unchallenged queen of Motown. According to The Wrap, Jennifer Hudson, who won a Grammy for her role in Dreamgirls (essentially the Motown story) is being considered for the role, and personally, I don't think there could be a better fit. The film has yet a name or anything more than a pitch-line, but it's certainly got legs and pipes if Hudson's onboard. We'll be sure to have our eyes on the matter as it develops, so check back with us over the weeks and months ahead, as the prospect of an Aretha Franklin biopic treatment becomes realer with every day.
