Kamaiyah Unleashes 'Got It Made,' Her Newest Mixtape Since Going Independent
The 10-track mixtape features appearances by Trina, J. ESPINOSA and more.
East Oakland-bred rapper Kamaiyah has dropped Got It Made, her first mixtape following the creation of her independent label.
Previously signed to Interscope Records under YG’s 4 Hunnid Records, the rising artist has chosen to unveil new music under GRND.WRK in partnership with Empire. This departure marks a shift in Kamaiyah’s artistry as it’s the first year she's had complete control of her career.
In the past Kamaiyah has dropped critically acclaimed projects featuring her unique sound. She has appeared on tracks alongside YG, Travis Scott, Schoolboy Q, Quavo and more. Got It Made, her third mixtape is a detailed look at her vocal prowess and her affinity for bass-heavy production.
Out of the ten tracks on the mixtape, the standouts include “Set It Up” with Miami’s favorite female rapper Trina and “1-800-IM-HORNY” featuring a Too Short sample. “Set It Up” reverses the roles of women who find out they’ve been cheated on, both Trina and Kamaiyah team up to seek revenge on the man who disrespected them. Our second favorite track on the release, “1-800-IM-HORNY” is an ode to her sex-positive fans, it’s the direct opposite of Too Short’s timeless song “Blow The Whistle” with a modern twist.
“Whatever, Whenever” is another favorite, this track is equipped with heavy production and is paired with her easygoing flow. The album closer "10 Toes High" is a triumphant listen, it showcases her journey and touches on moments when she felt discouraged.
Today, Kamaiyah took to Twitter to share that she’s been released from her deal with Interscope Records since August. She detailed that the deal she was signed to wasn't the right fit for her. “The respectful thing to do was to not address it until the music came out because it would be blatantly obvious I’m no longer signed,” she wrote. She went on to share, “The beautiful thing is I started my own label and I own all my masters it was a gift in disguise.”
