Kanye's Imax Film 'Jesus Is King' Rakes in Over $1 Million USD in First Weekend
The short film directed by Nick Knight debuted in 372 Imax theaters in North America.
Fresh off of his delayed Jesus Is King album rollout, Kanye West dropped a 30-minute short film that raked in $1.03 million globally this weekend. According to Variety, the movie debuted in 21 cities in 372 Imax theaters in North America and 68 international venues.
Jesus Is King, the film featured 13 songs, both gospel and Kanye's most prominent songs performed by a choir. Critically acclaimed photographer Nick Knight directed the exclusive movie. Key cities the film debuted in included Chicago, New York City, Los Angeles, London, Copenhagen and Melbourne.
Megan Colligan, president of Imax Entertainment shared an official statement detailing the company's partnership with West:
"We saw an opportunity to create a cultural moment with a visionary artist in a way that expands the Imax brand, while surprising audiences and experimenting with what we can bring to our platform beyond blockbusters."
Imax is set to unveil the movie to 78 additional territories on November 8.
