D.C. Council Member Questioning the Motive Behind the Killing of 13-Year-Old Karon Blake
Washington, D.C. council member Zachary Parker is questioning police about the shooting and killing of 13-year-old Karon Blake.
Washington D.C. authorities are investigating the death of 13-year-old Karon Blake, who was killed by a man who alleged that he saw the teen breaking into cars Saturday morning (January 7). According to FOX 5, the man has not been identified, but D.C. officials are working with the U.S. Attorney's Office to determine if there will be charges.
Blake's community are pushing back against the allegations of car theft, including his principal, Kerry Richardson, of Brookland Middle School. On Monday (January 9), the school is scheduled to hold an event honoring Blake's life, with mental health services available for staff and students.
“He was a quiet and inquisitive scholar who loved fashion and football. Although he loved his neighborhood, he loved Brookland MS (the faculty & his peers) and the structure it presented to him even more. He leaves behind his mom and three younger siblings,” Richardson wrote.
Now, Ward 5 council member Zachary Parker says he's inquiring with police about the shooting.
"I'm at a loss for words as to what would possess a resident to take matters into their own hands and take the life of a young person," Parker said.
Police officials say the man who shot and killed Blake owns a home in the 1000 block area of Quincy Street, where Blake was confronted and shot multiple times before 4 am on Saturday. Police also say that there's no indication that Blake was armed, although a stolen car in the area was linked to him. Neighbors also report seeing two other juveniles fleeing the scene.
