The White House Correspondents' Association released a press statement on Tuesday morning revealing the Saturday Night Live cast member was going to host the annual event. Alongside Thompson will be fellow comedian Hasan Minhaj, who will serve as the night's entertainer. The dinner will be held on April 25.
"Kenan and Hasan are two of the most engaged and engaging entertainers in America. I'm thrilled they'll help us celebrate the role of a free press in our democracy," Jonathan Karl, Chief White House Correspondent for ABC News and president of the WHCA, said. "We're looking forward to a lively evening honoring the most important political journalism of the past year."
Donald Trump has boycotted the dinner for the past three years since 2017. The New York Times reported that it is unknown if Trump will attend this year's dinnner or not, adding: "the White House did not respond to a request about the president's intentions."
In related news, a couple months back Thompson discussed Kanye West's pro-Trump rant when he appeared on SNL back in 2018.
"It’s a moment in the show where it’s like, sometimes they’ll do a last song over the good night credits or whatever. So, you know…U2 did it, McCartney did it, and they actually like go to the other stage and get with they band and do a whole performance. When I saw that he was standing on the regular stage I was like, ‘Oh, he’s just gonna take a moment and have a moment basically,'" Thompson recounted the moment on Hot 97.
"…it became extremely uncomfortable extremely quickly," he added.
