Killer Mike Praises Doechii As “The Leader In Rap Right Now”

“It is absolutely a testimony to me that the South has produced an artist like you,” he said of the Alligator Bites Never Heal artist.

Doechii has earned some well-deserved praise from fellow Southern rapper Killer Mike.

The two participated in a conversation with each other during a Grammy Museum event for Doechii’s Alligator Bites Never Heal album, which is nominated for Best Rap Album for next year’s Grammy Awards.

During the chat, Mike acknowledged Doechii’s talent, saying, “You truly are an artist. You’re not a rapper aspiring to be.”

“You’ve been an artist. You choose rap to tell a story but visually, [the cover of Alligator Bites Never Heal] is striking,” he continued. “It is absolutely a testimony to me that the south has produced an artist like you.”

“There are many other artists out of Florida, but you are the tip of the spear right now. I think you are the leader in rap right now,” he added.

Elsewhere, the two also talked about the possibility of Doechii possibly being the third woman to ever win Best Rap Album. In terms of solo female artists, Cardi B is the only artist to have won Best Rap Album in 2019, while Lauryn Hill, as part of The Fugees, won the award in 1997.

“I am extremely honored to be representing female rap in this hip-hop album category for the Grammys,” she said. “It is so necessary and it is such an honor. I think Lauryn Hill and Cardi B were the only women to win, right? So what an honor it is to have that opportunity.”

Along with Best Rap Album, Doechii is nominated for Best Rap Performance (courtesy of her song, “Nissan Altima”) and Best New Artist.

Last month, Doechii shared the Hill song she gravitates toward “all the time.”

“There’s also a song of hers that I gravitate towards all the time that a lot of people don’t know. It’s called ‘Peace of Mind,’ from her last on-camera live performance.”
