Kimbra Radiates Self-Worth In Her Artful New Video For "Goldmine"
No amount of precious metals could possibly outshine Kimbra in her excellent new music video for "Goldmine," which was released Wednesday afternoon. Draped in an opal jacket amidst an eerie black and white backdrop, the singer jolts and pivots in stop motion as streams of gold ebb and flow all around her. The figures and floes of precious metal seem to only grow and compile throughout the clip, but in one jarring scene the clip confirms what "Goldmine" has always stressed: what matters most is inside you, and our own self-worth is what's truly priceless.
"The process of gold is a fascinating metaphor for pain and suffering," Kimbra told Rolling Stone while discussing her hypnotic new video. "Gold must be refined in the fire before it takes on its true character. Much like life itself, we must be tested and refined before we can give from the deepest part of ourselves." The track is but one of many excellent efforts on her 2014 LP The Golden Echo, an album which saw the New Zealand-born artist collaborating with Thundercat and Bilal.
New Zealander filmmakers Chester Travis and Timothy Armstrong worked alongside Kimbra for the "Goldmine" visual, which was shot in an old Berlin factory and is entirely stop-motion with absolutely no CGI. Rolling Stone goes on to report that roughly 400 square yards of aluminum foil and 700 polystyrene spikes were used as props for the video.
But what's most memorable is the message. "We hold immense power within us and I love how this is shown in the video through the use of all the different objects that manifest around me and, eventually, through me," Kimbra told the magazine. "I often think about how the world is ultimately all energy and that we are creators of that energy every day."
