Lakeith Stanfield on Playing Joker: "Wait Until They See Me Do It"
Stanfield appeared on the Jimmy Kimmel Live to promote The Photograph with Issa Rae.
The list of Joker portrayals is already star-studded. When you think of the character, names like Jack Nicholson, Heath Ledger, and most recently, Joaquin Phoenix come to mind. If Lakeith Stanfield has his way, that list could get a little longer in the future.
Stanfield joined Jimmy Kimmel Live to discuss The Photograph, his upcoming film with Issa Rae. Additionally, they discussed Stanfield's stint in modeling school, as well as his last film, Josh and Benny Safdie's instant cult classic Uncut Gems.
The conversation eventually moved to the Joker premiere. Kimmel pointed out that Stanfield dressed up as Gotham's Clown Prince of Crime for the showing. He continued, asking about the multiple reports of Stanfield saying he wanted to play the character in a movie.
"I would love to play the Joker," Stanfield said. "That would be beautiful."
Kimmel asked Stanfield if it was discouraging that Joaquin Phoenix's recent iteration of the character was so popular. The film's success assumedly means that there won't be another chapter for a significant amount of time.
"It makes me go 'wait until they see me do it," Stanfield said confidently. "Also, I make my own Joker movies at home with my own personal camera," he said. "All you gotta do is just dress up and make your own...I still had the makeup on, so I was like 'just keep going with it."
Uncut Gems is still showing in theaters nationwide. The Photograph hits theaters on February 13.
