LargeUp Exclusive: Marley Premiere In Miami Beach
Earlier this week, our Caribbean specialists at LargeUp attended the premiere of Kevin MacDonald's documentary film Marley, a biopic on the life of, you know, Bob. The Bob. Seems like it was a star-studded affair and attendees were treated to a Q&A afterward with Cedella Marley and Billy Corben. In true Marley spirit however, the makers of the film have turned the somewhat elitist logic of the exclusive film premiere on its head, making the movie available online the same day it hits theaters (4/20--go figure) with a "social cinema" technology called Milyoni. Find out more on the movie's facebook page --at 37 Million fans, is already one of fb's Top 20 most "liked" pages. To find out why you need to see it, read an exceprt of Jesse Serwer's write-up below and get the full story--and watch the trailer--via LargeUp.
MacDonald, who stepped in to replace Jonathan Demme after that director himself replaced the original choice, Martin Scorcese, went above and beyond in seeking out Bob’s roots and motivations, locating the one-room house where Bob grew up in St. Ann, Jamaica, and visiting the small Bavarian village where Bob spent his final days in the care of controversial holistic doctor Joseph Issels. Mixed in with obvious interview choices like Bunny Wailer, Rita Marley, Judy Mowatt and Allan “Skill” Cole are people like the German nurse who cared for the cancer-sickened singer, Marley’s white second cousin and a half sister who only learned of him after the last name of Marley’s wife, Rita, piqued her attention during a chance meeting in the ’70s.
