Lauryn Hill Begins 3-Month Prison Sentence For Tax Evasion
Lauryn Hill checked into federal prison today, reports TMZ, where she will serve out her three month sentence for tax evasion. According to unnamed "officials" Ms. Hill was booked into the Federal Correctional Institution in Danbury, Connecticut at 11:15 AM EST. The FCI is described as a "minimum security type facility" where inmates live in "barracks type" housing and it has been confirmed that Lauryn will be housed with the general prison population.
As was reported on Okayplayer as elsewhere, the ex-Fugees singer entered a plea of 'Guilty' last year to three counts of tax evasion, for failing to file returns on $1.8 million she earned between 2005 to 2007. Her own much-discussed views on the criminality of her actions versus the criminal nature of the powers sentencing her to incarceration were aired in a series of Open Letters on her tumblr, not to mention her newest song "Neurotic Society." Find links to those statements below, as well as photos and a recap/review of Lauryn's surprise show at the Music Hall Of Williamsburg back in May--her last before reporting for this federal bid, a concert that was an something of an open letter in its own right. If we ruled the world...things would be different, that's all.
