Now, Nardwuar has released an interview he did with Lil Nas X, the artist behind the viral hit "Old Town Road." During the almost eight-minute-long conversation, the two talk about Cupcakke's remix of "Old Town Road" (Nardwuar mistakenly calls it "Old Time Hoe" and not its actual name, "Old Town Hoe"), X's father being a gospel singer, emojis, and more.
But a standout moment happens at the very beginning when Nardwuar gifts X a 60-year-old country song magazine and notes at an image of Johnny Cash in the magazine. X then proceeds to tell Nardwuar that Billy Ray Cyrus told the young artist that he reminds him of the late Nashville artist.
"Billy told me I reminded him of him," X said. Cyrus is featured on the remix to X's "Old Town Road."
Originally released on Dec. 2, 2018, "Old Town Road" went viral thanks to memes and online users dancing to the track on the TikTok app.
The song appeared on Billboard's Hot Country Songs chart only to be removed, the publication stating that "upon further review, it was determined that 'Old Town Road' by Lil Nas X does not currently merit inclusion on Billboard's country charts. When determining genres, a few factors are examined, but first and foremost is musical composition. While 'Old Town Road' incorporates references to country and cowboy imagery, it does not embrace enough elements of today's country music to chart in its current version."
