Lil Nas X's "Old Town Road" is The Highest Certified Song Ever
Both Lil Nas X and Billy Ray Cyrus took to Twitter Saturday night to celebrate the milestone.
Nearly two years after its release, Lil Nas X's breakout single is, somehow, still setting records.
According to Billboard, the artist's "Old Town Road" remix with Billy Ray Cyrus is the first song in RIAA history to go 14x platinum, unseating John Legend's "All of Me" and Daddy Yankee, Justin Bieber, and Luis Fonsi's "Despacito," which are both currently certified at 13x platinum.
Back in 2019, Lil Nas X took advantage of Billboard's remix rule (stating every iteration of a song will count to towards chart position of a single song entry,) releasing several edits of the song. The Billy Ray Cyrus-assisted version was by far the most-circulated of the bunch (1.1 billion streams on Spotify and 610+ million plays on Youtube alone,) but even the original is pushing 700 million streams at this point, while other takes are approaching the high-six-figure territory. The onslaught of remixes kept "Old Town Road" top Billboard's Hot 100 chart for 19 consecutive weeks (another record-setting first,) before it was dethroned by Billie Eilish's "bad guy."
"Old Town Road" was also nominated for three Grammys in 2020, including "Record of The Year," "Best Music Video," and "Best Pop Duo/Group Performance," taking home the latter two awards.
