D'Angelo Resurfaces with a Psychedelic Soul Masterclass
D'Angelo spins an eclectic set and details his first encounters with Prince, George Clinton, and more, in the debut of his new Sonos radio channel.
D'Angelo reemerged today to launch his new Sonos Radio channel, Feverish Fantazmagoria, with an entrancing hour-long DJ set.
Spanning decades, regions, and disciplines, the sequence features revered classics and deep cuts from a number of funk, soul, and hip-hop, icons, including Funkadelic, Sly & The Family Stone, Ohio Players, Prince, Marvin Gaye, George Duke, Mahavishnu Orchestra, Gangstarr, Pete Rock, and more. During transitions, D'Angelo opened up about memories each song or artist invoked, often with a loose J Dilla instrumental playing in the background.
And to open the set, the artist sat with Elia Einhorn to discuss the concept for the channel (which takes its name from an offhand description of a DMT experience he'd once heard,) early music memories (buying a copy of Roger Troutman's The Many Facets of Roger and being hired to play a wedding when he was just 7-years-old,) what it was like meeting his heroes, Prince and George Clinton, as well as when fans could expect to hear a follow-up to Black Messiah (don't hold your breath.)
Sonos Radio will also be unveiling new channels and shows from FKA twigs, The Chemical Brothers, Corey Smyth, Hanif Abdurraqib, and more, in the weeks and months ahead.
Hear D'Angelo spin his favorite records and detail his first encounters with luminary icons in the debut of his Sonos Radio channel below. Stay tuned for the next transmission.
