Lupe Fiasco Torches a Kanye Beat on New "Mobb Deep" Freestyle
The Chicago rapper lets loose on the instrumental from Beanie Sigel's "Nothing Like It."
Like so many rappers, producers, and influencers, Lupe Fiasco has been digging into Clubhouse, a new invite-only social audio app that's hosted some memorable (but mostly forgettable,) discussions of the current and former states of the music industry.
On Friday, the Chicago rapper created a "Rhymen Shop" room to discuss his art and creative process. But before he tapped out, Lupe served up a freestyle over the instrumental from Beanie Sigel's "Nothing Like It," a beat produced by Kanye West for the Philly rapper's sophomore studio album, The Reason. And on Saturday, Fiasco treated the uninitiated to the track, posting it on his Instagram page with the caption "Mobb Deep." Though it's unclear why he chose to name it after the Queensbridge duo, Fiasco is in ace form on the loose cut, delivering a high-octane performance over the early-aughts instrumental.
The year's actually had quite a few transmissions from Lupe. Over the summer, Fiasco teamed up with producer Kaelin Ellis for the collaborative EP, HOUSE. And in October, he released a two-pack of tracks. The rapper also launched a new podcast with Royce Da 5'9" this year, aptly-titled, The Lupe and Royce Show, which has just released a 12th episode. On the latest installment, the rappers share their respective takes on the Grammys as an institution after Royce secured his very first nomination in 2020.
