The album is the sequel to Ross' debut, Port of Miami, which was released in 2006. In Port of Miami 2, Ross gets features from Drake, Nipsey Hussle, Meek Mill, Summer Walker, Jeezy, A Boogie Wit Da Hoodie, Wale, Swizz Beatz, and more.

Leading up to the release of this album, the talk was mostly centered around one track: "Mayback Music VI," which was supposed to feature two one-time foes, Lil Wayne and Pusha-T, on the track together. (Ross later revealed he did it without either of the rapper's permission.)
The version of "Mayback Music VI" on Port of Miami 2 only features a not-credited Lil Wayne . However, Pusha's verse leaked right before the album was released. (Hmmm.)
