Lupe Fiasco Announces New Album 'Drill Music In Zion'
On Wednesday, Lupe Fiasco announced his forthcoming album Drill Music in Zion, with lead single “Autoboto” featuring singer-rapper Nayirah.
New music from Lupe Fiasco has arrived. On Wednesday, the rapper announced that his new album Drill Music in Zion will release next month. Similar to his 2015 album Tetsuo & Youth, the album cover features a painting crafted by Fiasco himself.
Along with the announcement of Drill Music in Zion, Fiasco also dropped lead single "Autoboto" featuring Chicago rapper and vocalist Nayirah. In August, Fiasco recorded Drill Music in Zion during a nearly-72-hour studio session with a folder of beats from Soundtrakk, ultimately creating an album that “speaks to Lupe’s internal growth, and paints him as a sort of defiant warrior who has achieved longevity and is still inspired creatively in an industry that so often spits up and chews out talent,” according to a press release.
“Your whole life you’re physically growing, and as an artist, I feel like I’m taller now,” Lupe said in a statement. “Not that I’m at a higher place of morality, it’s that my vantage point and perspective is higher. I can see further.”
In a recent interview with Financial Times, Fiasco spoke about his dislike of drill music, although the genre originated from his hometown of Chicago.
“My brother was a high-ranking gang member. I have friends that are Vice Lords, so I get it. But drill scares me because I know what happens at the end of that road: most of you are going to die," he shared. "We need these drill rappers to live longer, because we need their intellect out in the world. Don’t throw away your lives or your talent by being forced into unsafe situations. As consumers, I believe we need to do a better job of telling them that.”
Fiasco's last full-length album was 2018's DROGAS Wave, while he also collaborated with Kaelin Ellis and Virgil Abloh on 2020 EP House and Soundtrakk on EP Tape Tape, also released in 2020.
Drill Music in Zion releases on June 24th. Stream "Autoboto" below.
