Mannie Fresh Previews Yasiin Bey Collaboration On NPR's 'Microphone Check'
Mannie Fresh gave the folks in attendance at the first ever live recording of NPR's Microphone Checkquite a lesson other night, as he concluded his interview with a blazing rundown of his NOLA bounce reworks. After dropping priceless tales of Cash Money mania, his father and Lil Wayne's career with fellow beatsmith and DJ extraordinaire Ali Shaheed Muhammadand NPR's go-to hip-hop editor Frannie Kelley, Fresh dropped the (digital) needle and put on a true-to-form clinic, injecting tracks like Earth, Wind & Fire's "September", Michael Jackson's "PYT" and Hall And Oates' "I Can't Go For That" with that dizzying doubled-over hi-hat treatment, forcing us to reinterpret the classics in a wholly pleasing light (not before giving us a taste of that mythological Yasiin Bey collaboration LP though.) You can watch Mannie Fresh's bounce-laced DJ set and interview below, but be sure to keep it locked as we'll have plenty more on the ever-coveted Fresh/Bey tag-team LP as details unfold. Stay tuned for the next episode of NPR's Microphone Check.
