"All I Want for Christmas Is You" is the first holiday No. 1 on the Hot 100 in 61 years.
Mariah Carey’s beloved single “All I Want for Christmas Is You” has officially become No. 1 on Billboard’s Hot 100.
The song arrived in 1994 on Carey’s album Merry Christmas and has since become an iconic holiday-themed track. According to Billboard, "All I Want for Christmas Is You" reached the platform’s top 10 in December 2017, it also reached No. 3 last December. She currently holds the record for being the top-charting female solo artist of all time.
"All I Want for Christmas Is You" is the first holiday No. 1 on the Hot 100 in 61 years, it joins The Chipmunks’ “The Chipmunk Song” with David Seville. This also marks Carey’s 19th No. 1 on the Hot 100 chart, she extends her record for the most among soloists. Additional singles of Carey’s to hit the top of the prestigious list includes “One Sweet Day” with Boyz II Men (1995) and “Touch My Body” (2008).
In a recent Billboard feature, Mariah touched on what it feels like when a track she’s written and produced goes No. 1:
"When I look back on the songs that I’ve written that have become part of people’s lives, that’s what makes me the most proud. “All I Want for Christmas Is You,” the constant presence at Christmastime -- to feel that as someone who loves Christmas so much, I can’t even explain. And then I think about “Hero,” which I performed at the Tribute to Heroes during the 9/11 tragedy: It was a song that I had written and debuted on a Thanksgiving special, and it went to No. 1 and has become kind of synonymous with me."
Carey recently unveiled a 25th anniversary edition of her album Merry Christmas in addition to a new video. The release also came with unreleased footage.
