Pass The Popcorn: Marvel's "Luke Cage" Heading To Comic Con For Sneak Peek

Luke Cage, the next Marvel/Netflix series following the well-received Jessica Jones, will be making an appearance at this year's Comic Con, Deadline reports. Mike Colter, who stars in the titular role, will be in attendance at the San Diego Convention Center, along with showrunner Cheo Hodari Coker and costar Alfre Woodward. It's unknown if Cage's love interest Jessica Jones (portrayed by Krysten Ritter) will be there as well. Marvel also plans on showing preview footage from the forthcoming series, which is expected to drop on September 30.

Filming for Luke Cage originally began in September 2015 and concluded in March of this year, with teaser footage appearing after the final episode of Daredevil season two. The short clip features a group of guys shooting at Mr. Cage, absolutely unaware of his superhuman strength and stamina. Ultimately, he throws one of them through a window before the screen displays the show's name, accompanied by Nas' "Made You Look."

The show will be set in Harlem with Woodward portraying Mariah Dillard, a local Harlem politician — and cousin to recently announced Cornell “Cottonmouth” Stokes (Mahershala Ali) — trying to improve the community she was raised in. Other stars include Sonia Braga as Soledad Temple (mother of Rosario Dawson's Claire Temple, who'll be reprising her role from Daredevil and Jessica Jones); Frank Whaley (Pulp Fiction) as Detective Scarfe; and Theo Rossi (Sons Of Anarchy) as Cage antagonist Shades aka Alvarez. Adrian Younge and A Tribe Called Quest's very own Ali Shaheed Muhammad will be scoring the series.

In an interview done with Coker earlier this year the showrunner compared Luke Cage to The Wire. "It's very sophisticated. I mean, it's got a '90s hip-hop vibe, but it's really forward-thinking," Coker told EW. "...We have a lot of different musical appearances, but at the same time, we've got the Marvel action. We've got drama. I would like this to be, I mean, I know this is heavy but, The Wire of Marvel television, because we really deal with a lot of different issues.”

With the Black Panther having his big screen premiere this year in Captain America: Civil War, it'll be nice to see Luke Cage get added into the mix later this year.
