Pass The Popcorn: Marvin Gaye III Speaks Out Against Lenny Kravitz's Motown Biopic
The upcoming Marvin Gaye biopic--slated to star Lenny Kravitz and tentatively titled Sexual Healing--has already opened some old wounds. Playing out almost like Motown's answer to the controversy around the Nina Simone biopic, the details of the Julien Temple-helmed project have prompted strong objections from family members. The singer's second wife Janis Gaye voiced her skepticism right away. But now his son Marvin Gaye III has spoken out more forcefully, saying in an interview with TMZ:
"The producers and directors of this film are very wrong and shameful ... [They're] trying to do a film about a low period in his life. They don't even know the whole story."
The difference this time around is that Kravitz and Gaye III are longtime friends, who have known each other since childhood---increasing the chances that his opinion will hold sway. In fact, Gaye III told TMZ that "he and other family members are meeting with lawyers to try to stop production," adding:
"I would hope [Lenny] doesn't have any idea that we are against this film being done."
Kravitz has so far not responded publicly.
