Megan Thee Stallion Honored Breonna Taylor, George Floyd & More During Virtual Concert
The Houston rapper paid homage to numerous victims of police brutality during her hour-long set.
Megan Thee Stallion was a bottle of energy during her first virtual concert hosted on Saturday evening. She set aside a touching moment honoring the lives of Blacks who’ve lost their lives at the hands of police.
For her “first day back,” Megan unleashed a few of her Billboard Hot 100 hits including “WAP,”
“Savage” and “Hot Girl Summer,” reports Pitchfork. During the live streamed set she also performed a few of her best guest verses from tracks like Wale’s “Pole Dancer” and Moneybagg Yo’s “All Dat.”
Though a majority of the set was filled with high energy, the Houston rapper shifted the energy a bit when she decided to pay homage to Blacks killed in recent years. During this moment the names of Breonna Taylor, George Floyd, Ahmaud Arbery, Eric Garner, Michael Brown, Tamir Rice, Freddie Gray appeared on a large screen.
Alongside their names, a description of how they were killed appeared in addition to the dates of their untimely deaths. The screen also read, “Why is it so hard being Black in America?” This was a touching tribute since the entire country has been reckoning with their deaths in and the COVID-19 pandemic simultaneously. Countless protests have been taking place since the beginning of the pandemic as a response to the senseless killings.
Megan Thee Stallion’s return to the stage is also a pivotal moment for her as she’s been experiencing tumultuous personal incidents in recent weeks. Her set yesterday evening was a shining moment for her as she recently spoke out about being shot by Tory Lanez in California. She unveiled details of the evening during an emotional Instagram Live session after previously sharing she’d been shot without naming Lanez which led to social media backlash.
A few weeks back, she shared in a profile that her upcoming debut album would address Black Lives Matter. Saturday's concert could have served as a preface to what will be on the horizon for the rapper.
On Sunday, Megan dropped a freestyle on Instagram addressing the alleged shooting. Over a beat by "Big Ole Freak" producer Max Julian, she rapped: "Tic tac toe, I X this b---h/ If a hit dog holler, I address that s--t." She also said, "Got shot two times and I ate that s--t/ Bounced right back with a Revlon deal." Her confidence in the freestyle is unmatched, the video makes it clear she's getting back in her bag.
