Michelle Obama Criticizes Donald Trump's Decision to Scale Back her Healthy Lunch Initiative
Michelle Obama has done her best not to openly criticizePresident Donald Trump. (We all remember the phrase "When they go low, we go high.")
However, we're now getting to the point where the president is undoing some of the great work FLOTUS has done. Last week, Secretary of Agriculture Sonny Perdue signed a proclamation that scaled back some of the school meal nutritional standards spearheaded by Michelle Obama. (The Trump Administration also discontinued the Let Girls Learn program, an initiative that helps girls in developing countries.)
Michelle Obama spoke at the annual Partnership for a Healthier America summit in Washington D.C. on Friday. Obama sounded as frustrated as ever in reference to the Trump Administration's decision to not maintain the standards that she set:
“We gotta make sure we don’t let anybody take us back. This is where you really have to look at motives, you know. You have to stop and think, why don’t you want our kids to have good food at school? What is wrong with you? And why is that a partisan issue? Why would that be political? What is going on?”
Michelle Obama was careful not to mention Trump by name (so technically she's still high.) She did, however, let it be known that she doesn't think this should be a political decision:
“Take me out of the equation — like me or don’t like me. But think about why someone is okay with your kids eating crap. Why would you celebrate that? Why would you sit idly and be okay with that? Because here’s the secret: If someone is doing that, they don’t care about your kid.”
