It's been a little while since we heard from Mick Jenkins. The Chicago MC will change that in the coming days. On Tuesday, Jenkins released the song and visuals for "Carefree" Black Boy." According to his YouTube channel, the song is the first single from his upcoming project The Circus. Jenkins will release the project on January 10.

The video's title credits are typed in a retro-1970s style font. The video features Jenkins in four different settings: on the shores of a beach at sunset, in front of a campfire at dusk, behind the wheel of (and in front of) a late 1960s muscle car. At one point, two police officers stop Jenkins' car, eventually sending him away from his own vehicle. The video's director Jack Begert experiments with time-lapse, lighting, and perspective. The filmography pairs well with Jenkins' signature contemplative lyrical themes. Over the course of three minutes, Jenkins wrestles with the idea of being "carefree" in modern America.
The release will be Jenkins' first project since October 2018's Pieces of a Man. Since its release, Jenkins was featured on Brooklyn Michelle's "Cold." He also released "Percy," featuring Chicago MC Qari. In February 2018, he released the final chapter of the Or More; series titled The Frustration. Most recently, Jenkins appeared on KAYTRANADA's BUBBA album, on the track "Gray Area."
