Mixtape Monday: Gilles Peterson, DJ Jazzy Jeff, The Soul Preacher + More
This week's episode of Mixtape Mondayis ALL TRIBUTES EVERYTHING! With selectors from across the globe paying their respects to two massive talents — we are featuring sets that honor the life and legacies of The Notorious B.I.G. on the 20th anniversary of his untimely death, which shook the world on March 9, 1997, and Clyde Stubblefield, the ultra-funky drummer who gave hip-hop some of the illest breakbeats as a member of James Brown's band.
Brownswood Recordings chief Gilles Peterson is responsible for that mix, while DJ Jazzy Jeff puts in work for BOILER ROOM, serving as the chief architect for the company's Philly debut. The Soul Preacher and Paul De Loecker lift their respective glasses to toast to the amazing ladies around the world in celebration of International Women's Day. Last, but certainly not least, '80s hip-hop classics and Brazilian funk-and-jazz also make an appearance in this week's roundup, just for good measure.
Gilles Peterson - Clyde Stubblefield Tribute Mix
Gilles Peterson pays tribute to the funky drummer Clyde Stubblefield with an exhaustive set that speaks to depth of his legacy as the rhythmic master behind a bevy of funk, soul and hip-hop hits. Stubblefield was James Brown’s drummer for six years and in that time established a singular sound that would inform the foundations of hip-hop, electronic and jungle music. Peterson dropped this mix with a little insight on his relationship with Stubblefield’s music.
When and where were you the first time you heard Clyde Stubblefield on record?"That would have been a long time ago! Club wise it would have been going to all those rare groove parties back in London during the early eighties where his beats were the foundation of an entire clubbing movement - early Soul 2 Soul events at the Africa Centre in Covent Garden come specifically to mind."
What inspired you to do this mix to celebrate the Funky Drummer's life?
"How can we ignore the groove master? My role is to inform the next generation of the essential art brought to us by the legends of our music."

DJ Moodymanc - Brazilian Wax Off!
The home of hard to find remixes, edits and hidden gems, Gouranga Music teams with Manchester’s Moodymanc to drop an hour and 15 minutes of South American gems with the Brazilian Wax Off! mix. The set includes tracks from Jorge Ben, Uniao Black, Gilberto Gil, Dom um Ramao, Os Batuqueiros, Martinho da Vila and more.
I first knowingly discovered Brazilian music when I heard Flora Purim’s “500 Miles High” when I was about 14 and I was completely transfixed. (Fitting that I should start this mixtape with that track then: It still feels like a major achievement in my life that I was later to work with her!). As a drummer and percussionist, a record collector and a music producer the influence of Brazil and its music is omnipresent, and something from which I have never stopped drawing on for inspiration; from the complexity and beauty of its rhythms and folk music to the bossa nova movement which exploded worldwide and influenced so heavily the jazz scene, the amazing production values of the records that were being produced there in the 70s and the rugged disco, funk and more that has followed. Here’s a selection of tracks I picked as I sifted through my record collection, (I wanted to keep this 'all vinyl' and I make no apologies for the crackles!) some ‘classics’, some more obscure, all inspirational. I also wanted to give a breadth of styles but there is definitely a link between the selections. I hope that you enjoy listening to them as much as I did picking them.
The Soul Preacher - International Women's Day

Today, just like every year on March 8th, the world celebrates “International Women’s Day”. Therefore, it was only right for me to pay homage to the Women in Hip-Hop.
