Mixtape Mondays: DJ Clark Kent x NYC, BamaLoveSoul x Money, DJ Eko x Soultronica
This week's themes include New York City (the place where we dwell) and money (the stuff we spent trying to win more in last week's lottery). We also have volume two of the soultronica mix we included a few weeks ago.
DJ Clark Kent - Black in the New York Groove:
Black Apple sponsored this new DJ Clark Kent mixtape that, in their words, "pays homage to the city that continues to inspire us as artists and inhabitants of the Black Apple. It showcases the impact that this great city has had across all genres of art, film and music, and transcends all that love onto one classic mix-tape." Capturing NYC's essence in a single mixtape seems pretty daunting. "Making this mixtape was kind of tedious because of the music selection," said Clark Kent. "We wanted to use music that was totally based on the city of New York, the stories of New York, the idea of New York. If the name New York was in the title, we listened to the song to see if it was actually worthy of being on the mixtape."
So who made the cut? Rakim, Jay-Z, Beastie Boys, Kool G Rap. But also Paul Simon, Fleetwood Mac, Judy Garland, Frank Sinatra, and Barry Manilow. Guess they weren't kidding around about being true to that theme.
DJ Rahdu (BamaLoveSoul) - The Monies (Part 1):
Our people at Bamalovesoul (BLS) are currently raising money via KickStarter to keep their virtual doors open. To support their efforts, they are releasing two volumes of a money-themed mix (cause, ya know…they're in need of it). Volume one is now available to stream from their website. DJ Rahdu, the head honcho at BLS, does the honors on the 1s and 2s, mixing mostly remixes and rarities from Bilal, Erykah Badu, J Dilla, Black Star, Slum Village, and a few extra-credit picks like irreverent jazz legend Eddie Harris and Busy Bee (who famously spelled his name out in dollar bills in WILD STYLE). Check out the mix and consider supporting. Dollar dollar bill y'all.
DJ Eko - Soultronica Vol. 2:
DJ Eko recently blessed us with a soultronica mix just in time for Valentine's Day. She's back to burn with volume two, and this one is also somethin' lovely. Sleepy Brown, Miguel, Machinedrum x Azealia Banks, and even a Dancehall-remixed Beyonce make appearances. If this is all considered 'soultronica,' we're into it.
