Nas Speaks On 'Illmatic' & "Black Republican" On 'Real Time With Bill Maher'

Nas made good with an appearance on Real Time With Bill Maherspeaking to the legacy of his debut Illmatic, his position in the MC hierarchy and what it means to be a "Black Republican." While this certainly isn't the first time the late-night talk show host has taken on some of hip-hop's royalty, it does mark the first instance in which he's allowed an MC to really wax on his career as a guest, as opposed to a panel member. Nasty spoke to what distinguished his album from the countless pillars that went up on hip-hop's front porch in 1994 (see Ready To Die, Hard To Earn, Southernplayalisticadillacmuzik, Resurrection, The Main Ingedient, Tical, Ill Communication and on and on) chocking up the victory to the poetic and philosophical nature of the release.

He went on to express his gratitude for being considered one hip-hop's top 5 living MCs and what his Hov collaboration "Black Republican" was all about. With last week's monumental Kennedy Center performance, his roundtable discussion with scholar Michael Eric Dyson and tonight's appearance on The Tonight Show With Jimmy Fallon, it's safe to say that Illmatic is enjoying a hefty 20th anniversary bash. Watch Nas keep it stupid casual on Real Time With Bill Maher and be sure to catch what promises to be an epic performance on The Tonight Show, featuring The Roots and Q-Tip.
