Netflix to Add 'Moesha,' 'Girlfriends,' & More Classic Black Sitcoms to its Library
Netflix will be adding sitcoms like Moesha and Girlfriends to its library starting August 1.
In recent years, fans have pleaded with streaming services to add Black shows from the 1990s and 2000s like Girlfriends to their libraries. On Wednesday, Netflix granted many of those fans their wish.
Through the service's Strong Black Lead account, Netflix announced it would be adding Moesha, Seasons 1-3 of The Game, Sister, Sister, Girlfriends, The Parkers, Half & Half, and One on One. Stars from every show taped a message to their fans to celebrate the special announcement. Moesha kicks things off, the show will be available to stream on August 1.
Two weeks later, on August 15, Seasons 1-3 of The Game will be available. On September 1, Sister, Sister hits the library, followed by Girlfriends on September 11, The Parkers on October 1, then One on One and Half & Half on October 15.
The move comes two months after Netflix launched its 'Black Lives Matter' collection. New additions for the promotion included Spike Lee's Malcolm X, Ava DuVernay's 13th and When They See Us, Mudbound, Orange is the New Black, Dear White People, and Barry Jenkins' Moonlight. Additionally, the service added Black films like Love & Basketball, B*A*P*S, and Love Jones.
"When we say 'Black Lives Matter,' we also mean 'Black storytelling matters," Netflix said in a tweet. "With an understanding that our commitment to true, systemic change will take time--we're starting by highlighting powerful and complex narratives about the Black experience."
Netflix editorial manager Jasmyn Lawson announced the move on Instagram. "Speechless," she wrote. "Truly the best work of my life. I can't believe we were able to make it happen...BUT WE MF DID!"
