Nick & Navi's "Wicked Whine" Video is Filled with Dancehall Nostalgia

The LA-based "island R&B" duo hails from Chicago by way of Jamaica.

Jamaica-born, Chicago-bred singers Nick & Navi released the video for their single "Wicked Whine" on Thursday. Directed by Jamaican native Isabella Issa -- who recently took home the award for "Best Director" at the Black Film Festival of New Orleans -- the clip is set in Los Angeles.

Four-time Grammy Award-winning producer Rahki provides the beat, following credits on includes on Eminem's Recovery album, as well as Kendrick Lamar's Good Kid, M.A.A.D City and To Pimp A Butterfly. Most notably, Rahki produced Lamar's controversial single "i" and "Black Boy Fly."

In a press release, the twins' musical style was described as "'Island R&B,' a fusion of Reggae and Urban, Rhythmic." The twins' family has established roots in reggae and dancehall music. As children, the two spent time around reggae/dancehall legends Patra and Shabba Ranks.

"Watching greats in their element inspired the twins to begin writing at the tender age of 10, but it was the 90's R&B girl group sound that pushed the sisters to pursue a career in music." Nick & Navi released their first album Put in Work in 2009. The duo followed that project with the PH2 EP, under the name "Perfect Harmony."

In later years, the duo branched out into production, songwriting, and video curation. Additionally, the duo contributes to non-profits in Jamaica to support the performing arts and educational programs. In 2018, they joined Estelle and Konshens for "Really Want." The track appears on Estelle's Lovers Rock album.
