OJ Simpson's Release From Prison May Come Soon

O.J. Simpson may receive an early release from prison this year.

According to a report from Sports Illustrated, Orenthal James "O.J." Simpson could possibly receive an early release in the summer of this year, based on a point system Lovelock Correctional Center in Nevada uses to assess an inmate's risk.

Under that point system the following 11 factors are taken into account (alongside those factors are the scores that Simpson has for each one)

Age at time of first arrest (0 points)

Prior probation or parole revocation (0 points)

Employment history immediately before arrest (0 points)

Offense leading to current or prior convictions (2 points)

History of drug or alcohol abuse (0 points or 1 point)

Gender (1 point)

Current age (-1 point)

Active gang membership (0 points)

Completed education, vocational or treatment program during prison term (-1 point or 0 points)

Disciplinary write-ups (-1 point)

Custody level (0 points)

Overall, Simpson has a final score that is between 0 and 2 points, meaning that he is a low risk and a good candidate for parole.

Simpson, who is now 70, has been serving time in Nevada since 2008, after a conviction stemming from an incident at a Las Vegas hotel room. He was convicted of 12 charges around the retrieval of sports memorabilia including conspiracy, burglary, robbery, kidnapping and assault with a deadly weapon. Ultimately, he received a 33 year sentence, making for a release some time in 2022. However, if he were to receive parole then that would no longer be the case.

In other Simpson-related news, The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story has been well-received on the 2017 awards circuit. The series, based on Simpson's murder case in the '90s, won the award for Limited Series or Motion Picture Made for Television at this year's Golden Globes, while Sarah Paulsonwon the award for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a TV Movie or Limited Series, for her portrayal of Marcia Clark at this year's SAG Awards.
