Octavia Spencer Transforms Into Madame C.J. Walker in First Trailer For Netflix Series 'Self Made'

Octavia Spencer stars as Madame C.J. Walker in the first trailer for Netflix’s upcoming series, Self Made: Inspired by the Life of Madame C.J. Walker.
The four-part series will explore the life of the entrepreneur throughout her journey to becoming a black hair care pioneer. Deadline previously reported it will also show how she overcame “hostile turn-of-the-century America, epic rivalries, tumultuous marriages and family challenges to become America’s first black, female self-made millionaire.”
Inspired by a book by Walker’s great-great-granddaughter A’Lelia Bundles, the series also portrays Walker’s daughter Leila (Tiffany Haddish), her husband (Blair Underwood) and her business rival Addie Monroe (Carmen Ajogo). Garret Morris will star as Walker’s father-in-law alongside Kevin Carroll as her longtime lawyer and Bill Bellamy who will play Ransom’s cousin. The first full-length trailer provides a look at each of their roles in the project.
Throughout the clip, Spencer expertly portrays the titan as she deals with her own insecurities during one point of her life. As time goes on, viewers catch a glimpse at the tribulations that came with creating her business, her rivalry with Monroe and more.
Self Made is coproduced by Lebron James and directed by Harriet director Kasi Lemmons in addition to Queen Sugar’s DeMane Davis, Spencer also coproduced the series.
Self Made: Inspired by the Life of Madame C.J. Walker will premiere on Netflix on March 20. Take a look at the first trailer above.
