Oprah and Quincy Jones to Produce Film Adaptation of 'The Color Purple' Musical
Alice Walker's Pulitzer-winning novel is headed back to the big screen.
Following a decade-plus of scooping Tony Awards on the Broadway circuit, The Color Purple musical is set for another silver screen stint.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the musical is being adapted to film with the roster that helped the original 1984 sensation come to life. Steven Spielberg (director of the original film,) Quincy Jones (composer and producer of the original film,) and Oprah Winfrey (who produced the original film and made her acting debut in it,) are all aboard for the upcoming adaptation, with Warner Bros. set to develop.

The leap back to the big screen is buoyed by a strong box office presence in the musical's myriad tours and casts, garnering more than $350 million in sales (pulling more than 50% of its audience from black communities,) and a pair of 2016 Tony Awards for actress Cynthia Erivo in its latest revival.
Still in its early development stages, the project has yet to do any casting, though Erivo can be seen in Steve McQueen's upcoming film, Widows.
Stay tuned for updates in the weeks and months ahead.
