The 5 Worst Oscar 2023 Snubs: 'Till,' 'The Woman King,' 'Nope' & More
Standout movies like The Woman King, Nope, and Till are the most notable Oscar 2023 snubs.
Some outrage followed nominations for the 2023 Oscars on Tuesday morning (January 24). While films including Everything Everywhere All At Once, All Quiet on the Western Front and Elvis were given nods in top categories including Best Picture and Best Actor, fan favorites like The Woman King, Till and Nopewere snubbed.
Here are the worst Oscar 2023 snubs.
1. No Love for The Woman King
While The Woman King scored awards in the regional film circuit like theAlliance of Women Film Journalists and theBlack Film Critics Circle, the blockbuster epic received zero Oscar nods, with lead actress Viola Davis and director Gina Prince-Bythewood being excluded. Making things more controversial is the fact that actress Andrea Riseborough got a best actress Oscar for the little-seen movie To Leslie. (According to the newsletter Puck, Mary McCormack, the wife of To Leslie director Michael Morris, has been calling around trying to get actors to publicly support the film.)
It's also a disappointing moment for Bythewood, one of Hollywood's finest directors. And a missed opportunity for the Academy to nominate a female director this year.
2. Actress Danielle Deadwyler is not acknowledged for Till
Despite almost universal acclaim for her portrayal of Mamie Till-Mobley in the biographical film Till, Danielle Deadwyler was excluded from the Best Actress category. (We should also note that director Chinonye Chukwu also didn't receive a nomination.) It's a disappointment, considering Deadwyler has picked up some awards over the season — including the Breakthrough Performance award from the National Board of Review.
3. Black Panther: Wakanda Forever
Global blockbuster Black Panther: Wakanda Forever scored some nominations — including Angela Bassett getting a major look for Best Supporting Actress, and Rihanna receiving a nod for Best Original Song — but it was mostly a disappointing morning for the Marvel behemoth. Director Ryan Coogler was cold-shouldered for the Best Director category. And although Wakanda Forever nominations for Best Costume Design, Best Visual Effects and Best Makeup and Hairstyling, the MCU film is not up for Best Picture.
4. No writing or technical awards for Nope
Jordan Peele's most ambitious film yet, Nope, was always going to be a tough sell for a Best Picture nomination. But to get snubbed for all award nominations is surprising. Nope was one of the most visually impressive movies of the year and didn't receive any visual effects or cinematography love. The movie also probably should have gotten a Best Original Screenplay nomination.
5. RRR swings and misses
Indian Telugu-language film RRR was one of the most ambitious movies to drop in 2022. There has also been a genuine grassroots campagin to get the movie, which is on Netflix, in front of more audience members. Seeing that enthusiasm, director S. S. Rajamouli did something bold: he didn't submit the movie for the Best International Feature Film contention, instead throwing itself in for Best Picture contention. The gamble didn't work. RRR was mostly shut out, gathering just one nomination, for Best Original Song.
