Prince's Estate Wants To Make Its Own Documentary About The Purple One's Life

A judge has ruled in favor of a documentary about Prince's life.

The deal for the documentary is expected to bring the late pop star's estate an eight-figure sum, according to a report from Billboard. The future film project was supported by Troy Carter, Spotify's global head of creator services and an advisor to the estate's personal representative, Comerica Bank & Trust. Comerica Bank & Trust won approval of the film deal despite receiving opposition from L. Londell McMillan, the estate's former advisor as well as Comerica Bank & Trust's business advisor.

The judge also wrote that Carter should have creative input and a degree of control over the project to protect the estate’s interests. It is unknown of this deal has any relation to the two Prince documentaries already in the works.

Prince: R U Listening?, which was announced earlier this year, is a documentary that will tell the story of the Purple One through his bandmates, friends and family. Dez Dickerson, Prince’s first guitar player and Andre Cymone, Prince’s close friend and original bassist, are included in the film, as well as Sheila E.; Lenny Kravitz; Mick Jagger; Billy Idol; and Bono.

Prince: Pop Life is another film in the works. The film will be presented as a road trip, with prominent locations being Paris, Los Angeles and New York (and hopefully the city Prince represented until his death, Minneapolis). Through the journey viewers will not only get a glimpse at the Purple One’s artistic persona through his fans and artists that he influenced (as well as artists that influenced him), but also his personal life. The documentary will also utilize animated segments from filmmaker Joann Sfar to tell parts of Prince’s story.

There is also Prince’s Last Year, a documentary that was announced a couple of weeks ago. The film will be a collection of footage from the late icon’s final tour (the solo Piano and a Microphone romp) and is slated to feature interviews with friends and lovers alike, including George Clinton, Van Jones, Andy Allo, Eryn Allen Kane and more.
