Prince Plays Surprise Show At Paisley Park To Celebrate 30th Anniversary Of 'Purple Rain'
Princedoesn't need any reminders as to the scale and weight of his crossover record Purple Rain. While they certainly weren't his first offerings, the film Purple Rain and the accompanying album/OST were monumental in cementing the Purple One into pop iconography for the rest of his days. So when that landmark piece hit 30 years young last week, you better believe your boy's busting out all the stops. That means inviting a few faces over to bear witness to the madness of a 3AM set at his home and recording compound Paisley Park, including his co-star in the film, none other than Apollonia.
Being the gentlemen that he is, Prince brought up the meme-fied love interest from the film to join him on stage, sitting her down in a throne of sorts, while he ran threw a few numbers from his immense catalogue. The leading lady had the pleasure of reliving those star-powered moments of 84' from the wings and even gave her own personal account of the evening on Facebook, including plans to put her face on a mural in an installment in the purple manor dubbed the Purple Rain room, naturally. Below you can find Apollonia's chronicle of the surprise outing and a high-quality 10-minute audio clip that features a mostly instrumental extended-cut of him and his power trio of femme fatales performing the riotous rocker "She's Always In My Hair." Listen to the clip and read about that night below. Long live The Purple One.
Apollonia's Account Of The Evening:
4:42 A.M. in Minneapolis , just had a private concert by Prince and 3rdEyeGirl at Paisley Park….Ida on Bass , Donna on Guitar and Hannah on Drums. They play loud and HARD. Heard new music that was dope! He had a cool chair for me on the stage at his side and I sat there transfixed on every note, every move, every vocal. After every song I yelled and clapped my ass off. It was so amazing it made me sweat. These ladies are so talented and beautiful. I was charmed. And Prince….my heart still skip’s a beat. Paisley Park is a fun place. He showed me all my images painted on the walls. “Hey thats me!!!” I said , he just laughed in that cool way he that does. The biggest room will be The Purple Rain room….he will have us painted there, huge murals. “My big head gonna be up there?” He just laughed and laughed.
