Prince Estate Releases Unreleased Version of "I Could Never Take the Place of Your Man"
The Prince Estate partnered with Warner Records for the release.
Prince fans received a small gift on Thursday. The Purple One's estate has dropped a previously unreleased version of "I Could Never Take the Place of Your Man" from 1979. The release comes months ahead of the forthcoming expanded reissue of Prince's 1987 album Sign O' the Times.
The previously-unreleased version of the song was recorded at Hollywood Sound Recorders and engineered by Bob Mockler. The sessions date back to Prince's self-titled album. The song features just live drums and claps, bass, lead guitar, synths, and nine layers of Prince vocals. In 1986, Prince re-recorded the track, which was then featured on the Times album.
Last month, Prince's estate released "Witness 4 The Prosecution (Version 1)," a song intended for "Dream Factory." The Super Deluxe edition of Sign O' the Times will feature 63 previously unreleased tracks, including two entire concerts. His 1987 New Year's Eve show with Miles Davis will appear on the album.
This past fall, the Estate released a Super Deluxe edition of his 1982 album 1999. The new edition of Times is the largest release to date--the entire collection consists of 92 tracks over eight CDs and 13 vinyl records. The edition contains all the audio Prince officially released in 1987, as well as the concert from the album's accompanying tour at Stadium Galgenwaard in Utrecht, The Netherlands.
The Super Deluxe edition of 1999 is available on all major digital streaming platforms. The Super Deluxe edition of Sign O' the Times is set to be released on September 25.
