In a video released Tuesday, Q-Tip speaks on how the members of the council were selected, as well as who was chosen. Ahmir "Questlove" Thompson, Bobbito García a.k.a Kool Bob Love, Common, Fab 5 Freddy, Grandmaster Caz, Grant Hill, J.PERIOD, Jason King, Kierna Mayo, Large Professor, LL COOL J, MC Lyte, Mimi Valdés, Pharoahe Monch, Robert Glasper, Tariq "Black Thought" Trotter, Xavier "X" Jernigan, and 9th Wonder are all a part of the council.
"We selected people who thrive for excellence, have achieved excellence, and who desire it not just for themselves but for people at large," Q-Tip said. "It's just a must to have that, especially when we're in this creative realm of trying to put together great programming in an esteemed house like the Kennedy Center."
So far the programming has been nothing short of incredible. Last year, Q-Tip performed with jazz pianist Jason Moran where the two explored "contemporary sounds at the crossroads of their respective genres in this one-night-only collaborative concert."
This year, August Greene, the supergroup between Common, Karriem Riggins, and Robert Glasper, will be performing on March 29, and there will be a dance party DJ'd by Grand Wizard Theodore and Grandmaster Caz on March 16.
