Questlove, Common + More Recall Ferguson And Michael Brown's Death
Sunday marked the one year anniversary of Michael Brown's death in Ferguson, Missouri. Brown, an unarmed 18-year-old black man who was shot and killed by white police officer Darren Wilson, became the tragic flashpoint that set off a sweeping national conversation. Today, the #BlackLivesMatter movement has staged protests against police brutality in dozens of cities--and hip-hop is a crucial part of it all.
Over the weekend and into Monday morning, the likes of Questlove, Talib Kweli, Common and others shared their thoughts on the legacy of Michael Brown, Ferguson, how far we've come as a nation and how far we still have to go. Read some of their takes below and, at all times, stay woke.
Kweli, who played a free concert in St. Louis Sunday night to benefit social justice initiatives, was joined by activist Bree Newsome and others. Newsome, an activist, forcibly removed the Confederate flag from the South Carolina statehouse earlier this summer. This, however, wasn't the duo's first meeting, as Talib pointed out on twitter.
