Questlove Salutes New Lil Yachty Album: "I Love When Artists Pull Off A Good Departure Record"
Following the release of new Lil Yachty album Let's Start Here., Questlove went to Instagram to sing the LP's praises.
Lil Yachty's new albumLet's Start Here. has made a fan out of Questlove. In a recent Instagram post, Quest, longtime musician of The Roots and Oscar-winning filmmaker praised Lil Yachty's latest effort on Quality Control Music, saying that it “might be the most surprising transition of any music career I’ve witnessed in a min, especially under the umbrella of hip-hop.”
Quest, 52, also pointed out accompanying "departure albums" like The Beatles’ Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band to Marvin Gaye’s Here, My Dear, Amy Winehouse's Back to Black, Solange's A Seat at the Table and Radiohead’s Kid A as masterpieces that resemble Let's Start Here.
“But man….whatever you put in your Wheaties bro….keep goin,” Quest concluded in his lengthy caption. “Shit like this (envelope pushing) got me hyped about music’s future.”
Last Monday (January 23), Lil Yachty held one of three private listening events for Let's Start Here. in the greater New York City region, explaining that he wanted to separate himself from his internet rap peers.
“If we just gonna be honest, I mean, I had niggas that were copying the swag,” he said during the event. “I just felt like ‘Okay, cool, everyone can do this, that’s fine. But I’m gonna show y’all what y’all can’t do.’ You feel me? That’s what’s on this other side.”
“This album is so special and dear to me. I think I created it just because I really wanted to be taken serious as an artist, you know. Not just some SoundCloud rapper, not some mumble rapper. Not some guy that just made one hit.
Yachty continued, “I wanted to be really taken serious because music is, like, everything to me. I respect all walks of music, not just rap and hip-hop, everything. So I think I wanted to make something to show the world just how great it was to me.”
