Raheem Devaughn Sets Off A Quiet Storm With Janet Jackson Cover "Anytime Anyplace"
This is it. You can shut it all down--Raheem Devaughn has officially won Valentine's Day. The tender R&B artist has always made creative restraint his currency; Raheem is the pinnacle of "just enough, at just the right time." That right time is now and his cover of Janet Jackson's 1993 ballad "Anytime Anyplace" is practically perfect. Backed by a soundtrack of gently tumbling rain (honestly, could it get any more Quiet Storm in here??) Devaughn has layered his voice into gliding lines that caress the eardrums so well it's just not fair. Simple snaps and tasteful keys work are the only accompaniment that we hear as RD keeps close to Janet's original arrangement, perhaps taking it to an even more stripped down and sensual place.
The Valentine's Day present from Devaughn is a prelude to his fast-approaching album, Love, Sex, Passion, which drops February 17th. "Anytime Anyplace" appears to be a one-off gift to us all, but the album itself promises to be just as passionate. Just last week RD shared the video for "All I Need," and before that treated us to windows-down-type-love on "Temperature's Rising" and a tribute to the women of his life with "Queen."
But the time for reading is over--"Anytime Anyplace" is just a little too damn sexy. Grab the cabernet and turn off your phone--this one's for all you lovers.
