Rakim is Campaigning for a 'Verzuz' Battle with Big Daddy Kane
"Do it for Hip-Hop???"
Rakim is putting out the call for a Verzuz matchup with fellow hip-hop legend Big Daddy Kane.
The God MC began his campaign for the proposed showdown with an Instagram post yesterday (see below,) sharing a mock-up banner of him and the breakout Juice Crew member with caption "Do it for Hip-Hop???." It got plenty of attention on social media but has yet to garner a response from the live-stream platform's co-founders, Timbaland and Swizz Beatz, who have been busy teasing a prospective bout between modern rap giants Drake and Kanye West.
Though it has yet to feature any of hip-hop's earliest pioneers, the debut Verzuz match between RZA and DJ Premier is, to date, the closest thing to a "Golden Era" tussle viewers have been offered since it went live back in March. Subsequent installments have featured Babyface and Teddy Riley, Erykah Badu and Jill Scott (still the only all-woman session,) and most recently, 2 Chainz and Rick Ross.
Last month, Verzuz inked a deal with Apple Music to broaden the platform's reach. Battles will now be simulcast on Beats 1 and the Verzuz Instagram account. Apple Music subscribers will also be able to revisit each session in full following their initial airing.
