Rockstar Games Officially Confirms a New 'Grand Theft Auto' Game is in Development
The video game publisher finally offers an update on the long-awaited follow-up to Grand Theft Auto V.
Following nearly a decade of rumors and reports, a sequel to Grand Theft Auto V appears to officially be on the way.
According to a statement from Rockstar Games released on Friday via Twitter, the highly anticipated sixth installment of their blockbuster open-world franchise is currently in "active development." But they're not going so far as to dub the next entry GTA6 just yet. "With every new project, our goal is always to significantly move beyond what we've previously delivered," the company added, leaving plenty of room for fans to speculate about what form the next chapter takes.
GTAV upped the cinematics and scale of its world considerably over its predecessors. Not long after the release of GTAV, Rockstar launched Grand Theft Auto Online, which has been an endlessly expanded space for the company to add new features, missions, storylines, and music. Most recently, the online component of GTAV received a massive buildout called The Contract, which not only revived a fan-favorite character in Franklin, but featured exclusive new music from Dr. Dre, who also appeared in the expansion with Anderson .Paak and Snoop Dogg.
Obviously, we're far too early in the game's creation to know when we can expect it to actually arrive. But until then you can always give GTAV a fresh run-through. And it seems safe to assume that new expansions of Grand Theft Auto Online will probably serve as pretty solid placeholders.
