The 9th Annual Roots Picnic took over Penn's Landing in Philadelphia like a musical Godzilla stepping right out of the Delaware River--and we're still feeling the effects of the grand event (in our bones). The legendary Roots crew put together a big hit with huge performances from Kaytranada, DMX, Kehlani, Future, Leon Bridges and Usher. With a stacked line up of performers and DJs, this year's picnic had a lot of something for everyone who loves this thing called music.
Whether it was witnessing Will Smithsupporting his daughter, Willow Smith, on stage in a pre-Father's Day bit of awesomeness or the Everyday People party sweating out all the youngins' with solid tunes — people came from all over the country (and the world!) to enjoy beautiful experiences, meet life-changing people and enjoy the concert of a lifetime. "I came here all the way from Atlanta, Georgia just to see Leon Bridges," as one a distant traveler said to CBS Philly in an interview.
For nearly a decade now, The Roots Picnic has been a hallowed journey that features emerging talent, throwback prestige and a triumphant showing by the Illafifth Dynasty. Of course, there's nothing quite like feeling the sunshine on your skin as the bass hits your face and no photo gallery, video, documentary or recap can really do justice to the collective vibes of a live festival--that feeling of 10,000 other souls experiencing the same music, the same emotional high the same exact instant as you. But having been there, we can honestly say that this intense, visceral sizzle reel assembled by the OKP TV team comes damn close!
