SassyBlack (AKA Cat Of THEESatisfaction) Shines On Solo Cut "Personal Sunlight"
Sometimes the right rhythm is all you need. On her new single "(Dancing In My Own) Personal Sunlight," SassyBlack carves out a little open space in which to shimmy back and forth. Pianos oscillate from one speaker to the other while a flock of shakers and drums come together to make a beat that's as tribal as it is interstellar. And it's just that sort of diverse ear that makes Ms. Black's main group, THEESatisfaction, so damn enjoyable. Yes, SassyBlack for those uninitiated out there is the solo alias of Cat (aka Catherine Harris-White), the composer/vocalist who along with Stas comprises that progressive-leaning Seattle R&B duo.
Stas already shared her own recent solo project, the slightly-more-conventional Stas For Hire (and we emphasize slightly for a reason--both these women have knacks for unpredictability). "Personal Sunlight," though, is proof that SassyBlack is willing to forego not only vocals but almost every semblance of melody in order to put a grade-A beat on proper display. Astute listeners will recall her recent EP release Others Pt. 1 EP release from last year and note that the groove has only gotten stronger on this new offering. Personal Sunlight--the proper record--will reportedly drop later this summer. Listen to its title track below.
