Pass The Popcorn: Saul Williams & Anisia Uzeyman Explore Afropunk Cinema w/ Indie Film 'Dreamstates' [Exclusive Preview + Campaign]
Poet, musician (and now Broadway star)Saul Williams has a new project in the works--one that's especially close to home. Working with his wife actress and filmmaker Anisia Uzeyman have launched a campaign to raise funds to complete their Afro-Punk inspired love story Dreamstates. The film, shot entirely on two iPhones, was written and directed by Uzeyman and tells the story of two artists who find themselves in love after meeting and touring together across the U.S. In a special Pass The Popcorn exclusive, Uzeyman has shared three short extracts of the film to give the viewer a glimpse of the work in progress and give us a beautiful sounding of the films depths, from an intimate moment on the open road between our leads, to Saul in performance to another musical bit that's a bit more enigmatic...to see what I mean, watch the first preview clip below and read a statement from the filmmakers to get a sense of the the hazy, dream-like state between conscious reality and the unconscious unknown which ultimately inspired the choice of medium and subject matter (then click through to page 2 for two more extracts of the film).
Equal parts love story, road movie, and Americana, it tells the haunting tale of two wayward souls (Saul Williams and Anisia Uzeyman) discovering their love for one another in their dreams and reality while touring the United States with some of the most pivotal figures of the Afro-Punk movement.Filmed within the enclosed spaces, crowds, and the vast and varying landscapes of 32 contemporary American states using two iPhones...the film paints a portrait of modern-day America that is simultaneously sultry, sensual, and quixotic – all from the unique perspective of an outsider whose burgeoning love for another human soul is intertwined with a burgeoning love for the soul of a country.
